There are still only preliminary plans to make a full-fledged Doctor Who movie -- but that won't stop the cult TV series from conquering the big screen.

Doctor Who is set to take over the box office once again with a special two-night event coming to theaters ahead of the show's Season 9 premiere. What's more, the futuristic show is headed into the third dimension.

BBC Worldwide and Fathom Events will broadcast a 3D version of Season 8's two-part finale, "Dark Water"/"Death in Heaven," in approximately 700 movie theaters across the U.S. on Sept. 15 and 16. The screenings will also feature a special prequel scene for Doctor Who's Season 9 premiere (ambiguously titled "The Doctor's Meditation") and an exclusive interview with the Doctor and his companion themselves, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.

“We love bringing Doctor Who events to theaters and seeing the fans come out in full force,” Fathom Events VP of Programming Kymberli Frueh said in a press release. “This time fans get the added excitement of seeing all the action in 3D with exclusive bonus content not available anywhere else.”

The monumental episode "Day of the Doctor," featuring Doctors Ten (David Tennant) and Eleven (Matt Smith) together for the first time, was screened in 3D nationwide in November 2013. The event grossed $4.8 million at the U.S. box office in its first night alone.

Tickets for the screenings will be available for purchase starting July 31 on Fathom Events, or with participating theater box offices, which can be found on the event's page. The two-night event will run through September 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

The prequel will presumably pick up after the Season 8 finale, in which the Doctor and Clara come face-to-face with a mysterious villain, and are forced to make irrevocable choices. Doctor Who's 9th season debuts Sept. 19 on BBC America.
