"Where are we going?" asks Doctor Who companion Clara Oswald midway through the thrilling new trailer for the eighth season in the revived sci-fi series.

"Into darkness," replies the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, before the clip flashes monsters and scenes teasing what's to come for the time-traveling duo.

The full trailer, which first aired on BBC One during the final match of the World Cup, comes just days after five scripts from the new season leaked online this month because of an Internet security breach, prompting BBC to beg fans to steer clear of sharing spoilers.

Capaldi will star in his first full Doctor Who episode when the show's latest season debuts on Aug. 23. The first episode, "Deep Breath," will air at 8 p.m. ET on BBC America.

Capaldi assumed the role in the final minutes of last year's Christmas special, taking over for Matt Smith. "Deep Breath" will launch the 56-year-old's run as the 12th Doctor.

Until now, BBC has only teased the season with short clips and images. The most-recent teaser video hinted at the return of Davros, the evil sedentary scientist from another planet.

Samuel Anderson will join the cast as Coal Hill School teacher Danny Pink this season, which will include guest spots from Ben Miller, Keeley Hawes and Tom Riley.
