Doppler Podcast Client Now Open Source

Those that remember the early days of podcasting might remember when folks were still arguing whether or not the medium should be called PODcasting or podcasting. For those of you who weren't there for that riveting discussion, the former means Portable On Demand casting, and the latter is a portmanteau of the term iPod.

There were just a few podcast clients back then, including Juice (then iPodder), Transistr (then iPodderX), and Doppler (still Doppler!). For Windows users, Doppler is one of the better utilities, much quicker than many of the alternatives, with the standard set of features you'll find in most podcast clients (it downloads your enclosures and does some file cleanup).

It has been over a year since any significant upgrades were made to the Doppler client, so it makes sense that it has now been made open source and is publicly available on CodePlex. Cindy 'Smetty' De Smet told BlogNation that "Doppler 3.0 CTP, developed in .Net ... is licensed under the Microsoft Permissive License," and that they hope to "give the app a new boost by tapping into the resources of the open-source community."
