The wait for the newest version of Android is finally over. If you have a Nexus device, that is.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is beginning to roll out to Nexus handsets and tablets, Google announced Monday. The latest version of Android includes battery life improvements, better controls over app permissions and a revamped version of Google Now.

The Nexus devices that support the update are the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. Google's new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will ship with Marshmallow pre-installed when they hit shelves later this month.

As with other major Android releases, the exact timing of when the Android 6.0 update becomes available as an over-the-air update will vary slightly depending on your carrier. You can check for the update in the software update menu in the main settings app. If it's not available to download and you can't wait, you can also grab it directly from Google.

Google hasn't provided a timeline of when the update will be available to devices from other manufacturers.

Though not as much of a major overhaul as last year's Lollipop release, Marshmallow offers quite a few improvements. A new Doze feature will automatically conserve battery life when you're not using your phone. Google says Doze can extend battery life by as much as 30%.

The other big addition is Now on Tap, the latest upgrade to Google Now. The feature extends Google Now's assistant capabilities to provide extra information based on the apps you're using and make it easier to multitask without switching between apps.
