Preparing for El Capitan

Before you take the plunge, do yourself a favor and make a backup of your Mac (or at least your important files and folders). The easiest way to do this is using Time Machine and an external hard drive. You can also use a cloud service such as Dropbox, iCloud and Google Drive to back up your files and folders.

Also check your Mac for updates for your existing apps. Some of them are already being updated to work on El Capitan and installing the updates now will make the whole process more seamless.

Running the installer is easy and straightforward. Just follow the instructions and sit back and wait. Soon, you'll be able to access transit directions, have better window management and enjoy Find My Friends on the Mac.
