Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery's fiancé has died after a battle with a rare form of cancer, the Independent reported today.

John Dineen was just 34 years old.

Dockery had been promoting the final series of Downton Abbey in the U.S., but left her cast behind to fly to Ireland to be with Dineen, his friends and family in his final hours.

The couple were introduced by Dockery's Downton co-star Allen Leach -- who plays chauffeur Tom Branson in the hit British show -- in September 2013.

Although fiercely private about her personal life, Dockery did hint at her happiness with her new beau in 2014: "I have a wonderful man in my life from Ireland. We were introduced by Allen Leech. That's all you need to know!"

The funeral is to be held on the 16th December in Dineen's home town of Cork, just a day after Dockery's 34th birthday.
