Dropbox just made it a lot easier for people without accounts to share files through its service.

The file storage service rolled out a new tool Wednesday, called file request, which makes it easier for users to ask for specific types of files from individuals and groups, regardless of whether they have a Dropbox account.

You can request files from the new "file request" menu in the left-hand column of Dropbox.com. From there, type in the email address of the person you want to request the files from, and designate a folder in your Dropbox account for the incoming files.

Requests will appear in an email with a description of the request, along with an option to upload the files directly from the message. Files can be up to 2 GB each and you don't need a Dropbox account to upload to a requester's folder, though the site does require you to enter your email address.

In addition to making sharing documents, photos and other files more seamless, Dropbox product lead ChenLi Wang said the feature could stand to get more users on its service who may otherwise not be likely to join a cloud storage service.

"What we see here is an opportunity to present something simple they can successfully use and it gives them a confidence later on to use Dropbox for other uses," Wang told Mashable.

The new file request feature is available now to Dropbox Basic and Pro users. The company said it will make the feature available to its business users "in the next few weeks."
