DropTom: Campaign to "Unfriend" MySpace's Tom

DropTom is a new petition site that's looking for find a new default friend for the members of MySpace.

Anyone with a MySpace account and an email address can sign up to be added to the list of people vying for Tom's prime placement on users' profiles. Others vote for who they want to see instead of Tom. DropTom also provides you a badge you can place on your website, blog or MySpace profile to encourage others to vote for you. You don't have to be a registered member in order to vote, but you can only vote once a day (from one computer).

It's very doubtful that MySpace will ever go for replacing Tom in this manner, but DropTom is giving away $1,000 for the winner. That should be enough incentive for many MySpace users to sign up, either way. It's also rather difficult to find people to vote for on the site, though there are featured member spots on every page. If you'd like to be featured, it will cost you $1 per day. So when it comes down to it, the best way for this site to stick around for a while is if Tom isn't replaced, so the fun of finding someone to replace him with can go on forever.

MoveOn.org is another (far more serious) group taking action to change MySpace.
