The Dunkin' app allows you send $2 to $100 to friends to buy Dunkin' goods via text, email or Facebook. Though Starbucks doesn't yet offer that feature, both Coca-Cola and Pepsi have experimented with a gifting feature. In those cases, the gifting was to strangers via vending machines.
Meanwhile, the app -- available for iOS and Android -- also allows you pay for your coffee and treats with your smartphone, a capability Starbucks has offered for some time.
Starbucks began accepting mobile payments nationally in January 2011 with in-store 2-D scanners. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz told reporters earlier this month that the program has been wildly successful, accounting for about 1 in 60 transactions. The chain recently doubled down on mobile with a partnership with mobile payment firm Square. That integration is expected to hit stores later this year.
