LONDON -- So Sam Smith won a Best Original Song Oscar on Sunday for Spectre's "Writing's on the Wall," and he dedicated his Award to the LGBT community -- but not everyone was impressed with his winning speech.

Smith made a reference in his speech to a comment made last month by Sir Ian McKellen, in which he questioned why no openly gay man has won an Oscar for best actor before.

The problem was, Smith didn't get the quote quite right.

"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an oscar," he said. "If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world."

The thing is, it definitely isn't the case -- previous openly gay oscar winners include Sir Elton John and -- as Smith was about to discover -- screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Black, who is engaged to British diver Tom Daley, took to Twitter to point out Smith's mistake in the sassiest way possible.

Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here's a start: https://t.co/8hGTRtIaMK— Dustin Lance Black (@DLanceBlack) February 29, 2016

Here's a sample of the reactions to that tweet.

Smith hasn't responded to Black's tweet yet, but here's how he reacted after the ceremony when told he wasn't actually the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.

Sam Smith, just told that he is not, in fact, the first openly gay Oscar winner: "Shit! Fuck that!" (he was kidding, it was funny) #Oscars— Josh Lincoln Dickey (@JLDlite) February 29, 2016
