The new surname map feature, from collaborative family tree service, Dynastree, shows the geographical distribution of surnames across the United States.
Just type in your surname of choice and you'll get a color-coded map of results displaying the quantity of that surname per state, as well as supplemental statistics on how the surname ranks in popularity across the US. Surname and location data is pulled from landline phone books in the hopes of providing users with more historically accurate information.
Dynastree, formerly ItsOurTree, allows users to collaborate with relatives to build out a family tree for posterity. The interface creates nodes based on relationships, supports drag and drop, and lets you quickly add family members and their email addresses so they can participate in the construction process. Users can also customize the appearance and order printed poster versions of each family tree.
