UPDATED 2:31 p.m. ET

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern China's Yunnan province on Sunday, killing at least 367 people, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. Local media reports pegged the quake at a 6.5 magnitude, while the U.S. Geological Survey said it was 6.1 magnitude.

The tremor's epicenter was in Longtoushan township, 14 miles southwest of the city of Zhaotong in Ludian county. It hit at 4:30 p.m., Beijing time, with a depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The streets in Zhaotong were like "battlefield after bombardment," Ma Liya, a resident of the city, said. According to another resident, driving during the earthquake felt like "sailing a boat."

Ludian county, a densely populated area, suffered most of the casualties and damage. At least 122 residents in the county are dead, with more than 180 missing and 1,300 injured, Xinhua reported. The earthquake also toppled 12,000 homes in the county. Over in Qiaojia county of Zhaotong and nearby Huize county in the city of Qujing, the quake caused at least 53 deaths.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit Yunnan -- a quake-prone region -- in 14 years, according to state television broadcaster CCTV. A magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Yunnan killed at least 15,000 people in 1970. Four years later, a magnitude-7.1 quake left more than 1,400 dead. And in 2012, a series of earthquakes killed 81 people.
