Boston-based WHERE Inc. is best known to consumers for its location-based discovery mobile apps, but the company also runs a hyper-local ad network that handles more than 2 billion ad impressions monthly.
In December, WHERE Inc. won a much-coveted patent for geofencing technology, which creates a user-defined virtual perimeter for a geographic area and allows users to send and receive notifications based on their exact whereabouts.
PayPal Senior Director of Global Communications Amanda Pires wrote in a blog post that eBay would use WHERE Inc. to expand its mobile commerce efforts. PayPal, which is owned by eBay, will start by integrating its payment service into the WHERE Inc. mobile apps.
