European Central Bank President Mario Draghi was the target of an epic confetti-bomb during a press conference on Wednesday.

As Draghi began his opening remarks, a female protester shouted "End ECB dictatorship!" as she leapt onto the table in front of him and dumped a bag of confetti on his head before security removed her from the room.

The woman is believed to be part of the activist group Femen. Photos of the incident show Christine Graeff, director general of communications, looking on in horror.

She was carried out of the room smiling while flashing the peace sign to the surrounding media.

The press conference followed the bank's latest policy meeting that was held earlier in the day at the Frankfurt, Germany headquarters. Some activists accuse the ECB of trying to enforce budget austerity measures on eurozone countries, such as Greece, that are under financial bailout programs.

Draghi reappeared on stage a few minutes later and carried on with his remarks.
