While the Internet freaked out over Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift's supposed Twitter "feud," Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran were starting their own personal beef.
First, a bit of backstory: After MTV announced the nominees for the 2015 Video Music Awards, Minaj hit Twitter to protest the lack of nominations for her "Anaconda" music video, which broke Vevo's 24-hour streaming record. "Anaconda" received nominations for Best Female Video and Best Hip-Hop Video; her clip with Beyoncé for "Feeling Myself," on the other hand, was left out entirely.
Naturally, Minaj wasn't pleased.
I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
That's when Swift decided to jump in, even though Minaj hadn't directed her tweets at Swift specifically.
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Minaj called her and others on Twitter out for "[overshadowing] the point" she is trying to make about institutional racism at work in the media.
They're not missing the point, they're just attempting to overshadow the point. Oldest trick in the book. https://t.co/Y4dt1vKk6C— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
And thus, a perceived Twitter feud was born.
Elsewhere on the Internet, Bruno Mars decided to get in on the action, roping in Ed Sheeran in the process. What follows is a series of "deep" cuts, foul language and an admirable play-on-words.
Yo I want in on this twitter Beef!! VMAs is the new WWF!! @edsheeran Fuck You!— Bruno Mars (@BrunoMars) July 22, 2015
@BrunoMars any way we do dis you gon' come up short— Ed Sheeran (@edsheeran) July 22, 2015
