What's in a nail polish? Toxic ingredients with names like toluene, dibutyl phthalate and formaldehyde--chemicals you definitely would not want to ingest. Hence, the reason why nail polish and children don't get along very well.

Enter Kid Licks: A brand of organic, non-GMO and edible nail polish.

It all began when founder Audrey Amara observed that her daughter -- who often had her fingers in her mouth -- became interested in nail polish. To see if it was safe, Amara began to research what the beauty product was made of.

"She loves doing everything by herself so when she saw me painting my nails a couple years back she naturally wanted to do the same thing -- herself," Amara tells Mashable. "When I saw what was in nail polish, even nail polish for kids, there was no way I was giving her nail polish of any kind."

It took months of experimenting in their kitchen to create the right formula but Amara, along with her husband Josh, finally had a product they trusted with their children.

The polishes, which are all made from fruits, vegetables, and other organic ingredients (from corn starch to barley grass), come in three colors: Barley grass green, beet red and sour carrot orange.

Kid Licks goes on and dries like normal nail polish, allowing your child to apply on their own but can be removed with soap, water and a little scrubbing. If you want the manicure/pedicure to last longer, you can paint your nails before bed and use a blow dryer to harden the polish.

"I see Kid Licks not as only an edible, organic nail polish, but a way of life," Amara says. "Hopefully we can use our product to inspire people to take an interest in what is in the products that they use every day."

The couple is currently working on developing new colors and looking into edible face paint that promote a chemical-free lifestyle.

Each bottle retails for $13.99 and is available at kidlicks.com.
