Office parties are all fun and games until somebody nearly dies after the eggnog chugging contest.

That's what happened to Ryan Roche, a Utah man who won the office contest, but then ended up in the hospital for three days fighting double lung pneumonia.

"I pretty much just opened my throat and just poured it down. I didn't take a single breath the entire time," Roche told a local TV station.

In other words, he nearly drowned himself with eggnog.

Since the esophagus and air pipe are right next to each other, just opening your throat is probably not the best idea.

Roche downed the entire quart in 12 seconds -- beating the office's previous record of 22 seconds and winning a $50 gift card -- but almost immediately knew something was wrong.

"I started clearing my airways, and I basically was aspirating eggnog," he said.

Roche's wife, who filmed the whole thing, said she was scared because she could tell something was wrong but no one understood what happened.

He went to the hospital later that day, and spent three days getting antibiotics and oxygen to treat a lung infection.

“It’s one of those things where your competitiveness gets the best of you and now I look like an idiot,” he said. As for whether or not he'll ever have eggnog again, it's in the air.

"Maybe someday I'll venture out and have a sip.”
