Led by Nissan's Leaf, electric vehicle sales rose 23% last year to 119,710, according to research firm InsideEVs.

Though Tesla's Model S gets more media attention, the Leaf had a commanding sales lead of 30,200 units for the year. Second on the list was Chevy's Volt at 18,805. The Model S came in at No. 3 with 17,300.

In 2013, the Volt held a narrow lead over the Leaf with sales of 23,094 versus 22,610, respectively.

Nissan's Leaf carries a sticker price of around $29,000 compared to around $70,000 for a Model S and $34,000 for the Volt.

The total number of EVs sold is less than 1% of the market in the U.S. The total number of all vehicles sold was 16.5 million, up 5.9% from the previous year, according to Autodata. It's unclear whether low gas prices will curtail growth in EV sales. Tesla's stock is down about 18% over the last three months.
