LONDON -- Emma Watson has been speaking about how her transition into adulthood was dealt with very differently by the media, when compared with her male Harry Potter co-stars.

At an event in New York this week marking the launch of HeForShe Arts Week with Forest Whitaker, Watson, 25, explains that as she was coming out of her 18th birthday party, tabloid photographers lay down on the pavement to take photos up her skirt. The photos were then published the next day in the British tabloid press.

"If they published the photographs 24 hours earlier they would have been illegal, but because I turned 18 they were legal," she told Whitaker.

"Obviously, Dan and Rupert... don't wear skirts but I think that's just one example of how my transition into womanhood was dealt very differently by the tabloid press than it was for my male counterparts."

Last month, Watson, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, announced that she is taking a year off acting to focus becoming more immersed in gender studies.
