Emmy veteran Allison Janney has done it again, winning Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as a single parent and recovering addict on the CBS sitcom Mom.
This is Janney's seventh victory out of 10 nominations since 2000. Other than the repeat wins for Mom, Janney previously took home drama hardware for NBC's The West Wing (four times) and Showtime's Masters of Sex (once).
"There were eight of us in this category, and I feel like I won the lottery," Janney said in her acceptance speech. "Thank you [Chuck Lorre] for creating such a deeply flawed character and thinking of me to play her."
On Lorre's Mom, Janney plays former substance abuser Bonnie Plunkett, who is trying to make amends with her daughter after years of neglect.
Janney beat out Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Gaby Hoffmann (Transparent), Jane Krakowski (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) and Niecy Nash (Getting On).
Eight other actresses have won this category at least twice in a row, most recently Modern Family's Julie Bowen. Other repeat winners include Betty White, Bebe Neuwirth, Ann B. Davis, three-time winners Laurie Metcalf and Valerie Harper, and four-time winners Doris Roberts and Rhea Perlman.
Fellow comedians Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer presented the award to Janney, poking fun at the lack of recognition women in comedy are often given.
"What a great two to four hours for women in television," Poehler quipped.
