With his hands and feet shackled, the 24-year-old Marquez answered "not guilty" when asked for his plea.

A jury trial was set for Feb. 23. He faces 50 years behind bars if convicted.

Marquez was friends with Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the husband-and-wife attackers who killed 14 people and wounded 22 others on Dec. 2. The couple was later killed in a shootout with authorities.

His plea comes a day after authorities asked for the public's help in filling an 18-minute gap in the timeline on Dec. 2, between the deadly attack at the Inland Regional Center and the shootout in which both attackers, Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, were killed.

On Monday, workers returned to the Inland Regional Center for the first time since the shooting.
