If you want true suspense, look no further than a Wes Craven film.
The Hollywood horror master died August 30 after a battle with brain cancer, leaving behind a library of incredible movies that set the standard for filmmakers of every genre.
Here are five essential Craven works that every film nerd -- and everyone else -- needs to see in order to truly celebrate the legend's life and legacy.
But first, grab a friend -- and don't plan on sleeping tonight.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Available to rent on Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Google Play
If there's one Wes Craven movie you see in your lifetime, let it be this one. Freddy Krueger, a vicious serial killer who kills his victims in their own dreams, is one of the most prolific villains in cinema history -- and he launched one of the most successful horror franchises of all time with this movie. Bonus: Teenage Johnny Depp in his first film appearance.
2. The Last House on the Left (1972)
Available to rent on iTunes
Based on Ingmar Bergmann's The Virgin Spring, The Last House on the Left was Wes Craven's first film. He wrote and directed the adaptation, in which a group of escaped convicts murder a 17-year-old girl. It's dark and brutal -- but even though it's hard to watch, the film proves Craven was brilliant from the beginning of his career to the end of it.
3. Scream (1996)
Available to stream on Netflix and to rent on iTunes
Teen horror flicks catch a lot of flack, but Craven was a master of the genre. Scream's script blends a spooky "the call was coming from inside the house" vibe with plenty of gore and self-referential humor -- making it the perfect meta-horror film for people who are too cool to be scared.
4. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
Available to rent on Amazon Instant Video and iTunes
The remake of The Hills Have Eyes scared plenty of audiences out of their seats in 2006, but that's only because the original was beyond shocking. The 1977 film follows a suburban family as they are targeted and tortured by a family of mutants in the Nevada desert.
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Available to rent on iTunes
