Here's What You Can Do With iOS 8 Extensions

In our latest Ask a Dev video, iOS architect Kevin Harwood discusses why extensions are a big deal for iOS 8 and Yosemite.

Developers have been asking for this type of functionality for a long time, and with iOS 8, Apple has delivered a framework that allows apps to extend functionality across all other apps on the platform.

One example: They now provide custom functionality in the notification center, which makes it easier for users to interact with information they care about most. Sharing extensions will allow developers to enable sharing content into their services from across all other applications.

Developers are also excited about custom action extensions, which will allow hooking into a password manager to pre-fill your username and password in mobile Safari.

And the new photo editing extensions will provide advanced photo editing interfaces for specific photos, all the while letting Apple's software do the actual photo management.
