A volunteer firefighter badly burned in a 2001 blaze has received the most extensive face transplant ever. The transplant covers 41-year-old Patrick Hardison’s skull and much of his neck. In 2001 he had lost his ears, lips, eyelid tissue and most of his nose. The surgery, announced Monday, began on Aug. 14 and lasted 26 hours. He is still undergoing physical therapy but plans to return home to Mississippi in time for Thanksgiving.
