[img src="" caption="" credit="" alt=""]Facebook is still being blocked in Syria, making this the second week those within Syrian borders, including Damascus, have been unable to access the social network. The Syrian government is believed to have blocked the site as a way to prevent Israeli users from infiltrating Syrian social networks, as a result of reports that Israelis have been entering Syria-based groups.

[img src="" caption="" credit="" alt=""]With the current President Assad's heavy hand on the implementation of furthered government regulation over several aspects of Syrian society, this type of control has been the subject of debate for human rights groups and advocates around the world. But as we very well know, Syria isn't the only place blocking popular social networks. Earlier this week Twitter was banned by the United Arab Emirates, and the blocking of SNS has become a regular occurrence on a global scale.

And as Sean mentioned last month in regards to Facebook having been banned in Syria, the government has gone so far as to step up the regulation of public offerings of Internet access. That's an issue that's being taken up in American politics as well, with a bill having been passed this week requiring providers of public wi-fi to report obscene images being accessed by their users. How much regulation does social networking and Internet access need?
