For developers, the copy/paste custom tags offer an easy way to add functionality, while for existing apps, offering up your own custom tags could increase your reach. Other custom tags that have already been published include Causes, Graffiti, and Visual Bookshelf. Facebook also notes that custom tags can improve app performance, since “one custom tag can replace a lot of FBML and HTML content inline.”
Custom tags seem like a win-win, and are another sign of Facebook’s increasingly open source mindset.
