Facebook Updates: Now With Emoticons

Notice anything unusual in your Facebook feed lately?

If you're seeing a proliferation of smiley faces and hearts in your friends' comments, it's not that you haven't noticed them before. Facebook quietly rolled out the ability to add emoticons to comments late last week.

If you can't stand such iconography, take heart in the fact that Facebook users still can't use them in status updates themselves -- just in the comments, which are more easily hidden or ignored.

Facebook also doesn't let you add emoticons via its mobile apps, even in comments. It does let you use them in chats and in its Messenger app, however. Check out the video above for examples of the kind of icons Facebook offers; there is a wider variety than you might expect, such as sharks and penguins.
