Facebook, the massively popular social network for schools, colleges and companies, has just announced a promotion with iTunes that will involve giving away 10 million free music samplers over the next 10 weeks (1 million per week). Each sample compilation includes 25 songs and focuses on a different music genre - Alternative, Rock, Hip-Hop, Dance and Electronica. I'm told that users simply have to log into their Facebook accounts and look for the iTunes banner, but it doesn't currently display in my account. Unfortunately, the offer is also limited to iTunes users in the US.

Facebook now reports over 8.3 million registered users and ranks as the 7th most popular US website. However, it still remains in second place when it comes to social networking - it trails MySpace by a substantial margin. MySpace Music is a major draw, so this could be seen as an attempt to associate Facebook more closely with the music scene.
