One of Facebook's top overseas employees announced she'll be leaving the company in January to serve as head of a UK technology investment organization.

Joanna Shields, who has worked as Facebook's managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa since 2010, will now be overseeing Tech City, a British investment group aimed to support the growth of tech clusters in East London.

The tech companies are located in a neighborhood nicknamed Silicon Roundabout. Similar in both name and nature to California's Silicon Valley, the area has a sharp focus on supporting small startups -- only none of them have gone public just yet, the BBC reports.

In a statement, Shields said: "With the right boost now, there is no reason why we can't make London the number one location for tech in the world." Facebook has not yet announced who will replace Shields once she leaves.
