'Pigs in a blanket' are usually a treat, but not when referring to a baby pig trapped under a blanket of snow.
This weekend's blizzard hit the east coast hard, and Facebook user Sarah Pekkanen decided to make the best of the storm by spending the weekend at a nearby Maryland-area ski resort with friends and their children. Little did they know they’d be embarking on a heroic journey to rescue a baby pig.
As Pekkanen describes in her Facebook post, her friends Perry and Liz were out with their kids Saturday night when they happened to discover a baby pig trapped in the snow and ice by the side of the highway. The piglet was half-frozen and stuck in the path of a huge snow plow that was headed right for it.
Thankfully, the family managed to free the pig before the plow buried it. Then, they warmed it up and snuck it back to their room at the resort by wrapping it in a sweatshirt.
The little pig ended up spending the night in the children’s arms while it continued to thaw.
Perry Smith's family documented his recovery on Facebook. Though the little piggy objected to warm milk the night it was rescued, after a good night’s sleep it enjoyed a breakfast of smushed bananas, grapes, rice cereal and water.
Pekkanen said that the piglet -- which has been named Wee Wee -- is still resting and seems much happier now that it’s safe and warm.
The family wanted to keep little Wee Wee, but they will instead let the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Poolesville, Maryland, adopt the lucky pig.
