Two Chicago area men were arrested on Wednesday night by the FBI for "conspiring to provide material support to ISIS," according to a statement from the Department of Justice.
Army National Guard Specialist Hasan Edmonds, 22, was arrested at Chicago Midway Airport as he attempted to travel to Cairo, while his cousin Jonas Edmonds, 29, was arrested at his home in Aurora, Illinois.
The pair had allegedly intended to carry out an attack on an Illinois military facility and one of the men told an undercover FBI agent that they planned to use Hasan Edmonds’ uniforms and insider information to target the facility.
“They plotted to attack members of our military within the United States. Disturbingly, one of the defendants currently wears the same uniform of those they allegedly planned to attack," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin. "I want to thank the many agents, analysts, and prosecutors who are responsible for disrupting the threat posed by these defendants."
Both men are expected to appear in a Chicago court today.
The Justice Department alleges that an undercover FBI investigation revealed that Hasan Edmonds and Jonas Edmonds had intended for Hasan, a member of the Army National Guard stationed in Illinois, to travel overseas and fight on behalf of the Islamic State. Once he left the country, his cousin Jonas Edmonds, planned to attack an U.S. military facility located in northern Illinois.
Hasan Edmonds had booked a flight on March 25, 2015, from Chicago to Cairo with layovers in Detroit, Michigan, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with the intention of joining Islamic State militants according to the charges.
