BOSTON — The latest blizzard ripping through Boston on Sunday has officially made February the city's snowiest month of all-time.

It's official, Boston has reached its snowiest month on record with 45.5 total inches. The old record was 43.3 in January 2005.— NWS Boston (@NWSBoston) February 15, 2015

The storm began on Saturday and has surged into Sunday, blanketing parts of the city with about another foot of snow, according to Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, who spoke at a press conference on Sunday morning.

If Boston gets 10.3" of snow from this storm, the city will have seen more snow in 3 weeks than Chicago has ever seen in an entire winter.— Eric Fisher (@ericfisher) February 14, 2015

Boston has been blitzed by around six feet of snow over the past three weeks, a stunning succession of storms even for a city that is no stranger to blizzards.

This winter is already at number three on the list of Boston's all-time snowiest seasons, with around 90 inches so far. The number to beat comes from the Winter of 1995-96, which topped out at 107.6 inches.

Passing that all-time snow total is a definite possibility this year, with half of February still to come.

The storm has brought frigid wind chills and bursts of wind that instantly drop the temperature into potentially dangerous territory. The gusts are powerful and potentially damaging, with hurricane-strength blasts expected along the coast.

The MBTA has shut down all public transportation, shuttering subways, buses and more.

Driving in the city is also a mess. Walsh has asked people not to drive in Boston on Sunday, as roads are coated with snow. The city is running an emergency traffic plan that has turned some two-way streets into one-way roads.

The MBTA said in a statement that it will decide on Sunday whether to reopen some public transportation on Monday.
