It's not the same as bringing a Harry Potter wand to opening night of The Goblet of Fire.
Fifty Shades of Grey fans will not be permitted to bring, shall we say, tributes to certain theaters once the film opens on Friday, Feb. 13; this includes ropes, whips, ties and more.
"While we welcome those guests who want to show their excitement for a film by dressing up in costume, we do not permit weapons (real or fake), or props/costumes that would make guests uncomfortable, or detract from the moviegoing experience," AMC Theaters spokesperson Ryan Noonan told Mashable.
Film fans have a history of dressing up, bringing mementos or even acting in character, while attending movies. In addition to Harry Potter-related wizardry, Sex and the City fans often wore their chicest outfits or iconic stiletto heels, while Star Wars lovers bring light sabers and The Avengers fans pull out shields and face paint.
But it appears something about Fifty Shades seems a little more taboo or dangerous, though participants in the BDSM community protest these assumptions don't accurately represent the community.
What one group calls a pleasure toy, another calls a weapon. Meanwhile, others may just consider it a simple prop for a die-hard fan.
Regal Entertainment Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Cinemark could not be reached for comment.
