'Jeopardy' Lays Down the Law on 'GIF' Pronunciation

What is Trebek lays down the law on how to pronounce GIF, Alex?

That's what happened on Tuesday night's episode of Jeopardy, as host Alex Trebek asked contestants the question of the year: "The inventor of this image format said the OED wrongly has two pronunciations of it -- the right one is with a soft 'G'."

The three contestants all answered the "Final Jeopardy" round correctly with, of course, "What is a GIF?" And Trebek -- as if bestowed with the power from the Internet Gods -- read the answers aloud, pronouncing GIF like the peanut butter.

It's not a shocking answer, though. In May, Steve Wilhite, the father of the Graphics Interchange Format, declared the correct pronunciation at the Webby Awards. But now that Trebek has spoken, the case is really closed.

So get it right, lest you cause Trebek to have a fit.
