While it's tempting to spend the first day of the new year getting in some quality time with a hangover, there's a better option: Taking a free hike in a local state park.
First Day Hikes, now an annual tradition across the United States, are great ways to get started on any health- or nature-related resolutions. Especially resolutions that could be all but forgotten come February.

“First Day Hikes offer families the opportunity to rejuvenate and reconnect with nature on guided outdoor adventures,” National Association of State Park Directors President Domenic Bravo said in a statement. “There are shorter options for families with young children, to longer treks for adventure seekers. State parks offer stunning views, unique cultural and historical experiences, and wintering wildlife for everyone to enjoy.”
