For better or worse, first kisses are almost always memorable. If the kissers are lucky, locking lips is a moment of heart-stopping chemistry.
Most couples take the kiss for granted, but for lesbian and gay partners, a kiss can take on historical importance -- whether it's the first or fiftieth.

Take for example, Tori Sisson and Shanté Williams, who wed this week in Alabama after a federal ruling legalized same-sex marriage in the state.
Sisson and Williams were the first couple to file their marriage license in Montgomery, and the photograph of their kiss became a vivid symbol of equality, particularly given that their legal victory was overshadowed by judges across the state who defied the ruling and refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
In honor of the ruling and, of course, Valentine's Day, Mashable rounded up other photos of same-sex couples celebrating their love with a kiss, often their first as a married couple.
