The Flaming Lips are careening across the American south for 24 hours, playing 8 shows in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record. But you don't have to be there to experience it - as part of the O Music Awards, MTV is bringing the experience to laptops and living rooms.

In the spirit of the O Music Awards, which recognize the intersection of music, tech and the web, MTV is streaming the entire 24-hour experience. Mashable is on hand, reporting from the event and keeping you up to date on everything that's going down.

The first show of the tour took place in Handy Park in Memphis, Tenn., and featured an extended set from the Flaming Lips. To break the official record, currently held by Jay-Z, they must play at least 15 minutes in each location. In Memphis, they spent an extra 45 minutes performing before bringing Mayor A.C. Wharton on stage to kick off the marathon. A representative from Guinness World Records then officially started the clock at 6:30 p.m. CDT, coinciding with the first notes of their first true set of the tour.

Our Storify below shows scenes from the concert and captures the unique energy of a Flaming Lips show.
