Florida police believe that a man on the run from local police was killed by an alligator while hiding in a pond.

Matthew Riggins, 22, was reported missing on Nov. 13. According to Bay News 9, Riggins ran from Brevard County police after they arrived on a scene where he and a second suspect were allegedly planning to break into homes.

According to police, Riggins had called his girlfriend to tell her that he'd be breaking into homes on the night he went missing. When deputies, K-9 units and a sheriff's helicopter arrived in the area, he reportedly called again to say he was being chased.

"He probably went into the lake to hide from the officers and the dog, and came across that gator," said a spokesperson for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Upon discovering Riggins body in the pond 10 days later, officers ran into the aggressive 11-foot alligator that killed him and euthanized it.
