Think of the cinemagraph as the GIF's sophisticated older sibling.
Instead of a low-grade looping image, cinemagraphs are high-quality photographs with minor, repeating movements. Photographer Daria Khoroshavina has perfected the medium, putting it to good use for her project Kitchen Ghosts.
The project is a mesmerizing collection of food-themed cinemagraphs that capture small moments in the kitchen, like cream swirling into coffee or a cook beating eggs for French toast.
Khoroshavina tells Mashable that a desire for experimentation led her to this mesmerizing medium. "[When] I saw a cinemagraph I immediately decided that I want to create them, to make people stare at my images, to keep them longer," she said. "I tried making cinemagraphs from portraits and nature, but once I filmed my friend cooking I felt like it was the most fun."
