The American muscle car has received a modern Australian twist -- and locals have gone into overdrive.

For the first time in 50 years, the Ford Mustang has been made in right-hand drive straight off the production line for the Australian market.

The new model landed on Australian shores on Wednesday morning, but if you haven't pre-ordered the American pony, don't expect a Christmas surprise.

In sad news, the new versions of the 1960s muscle car -- a Ford Mustang Fastback and Convertible -- are sold out Down Under for all of 2016, after dealers received 4,000 pre-orders with 80% of deposits paid.

But despair not, there will be more coming in 2017 and the company plans to roll out 20 different vehicles by 2020.

In true Aussie fashion, 86% of the new Mustang owners have snapped up the V8 model -- but Ford expects the number of EcoBoost models to grow in popularity once the die-hard fans get their fix.

More Australians were in favour of the cheaper Fastback model compared to the Convertible, with the Fastback selling for a starting price of A$50,514 and the Convertible coming in at just under A$60,000.

Ford President and CEO Graeme Whickman said the company was "overwhelmed and humbled" by the response in Australia. "[It] is probably our closest equivalent to the Beatles first trip to Australia," he joked in a statement.

One thing is certain, Mustang mania has certainly arrived.
