Fox to Offer Cloud-Based Movies Ahead of Disc and VOD Release

Fox will start offering movies closer to the theatrical release -- some three weeks before those movies become available on discs or through video-on-demand services, the New York Times reports.

The movies will be offered through the UltraViolet cloud-based licensing system, which lets users access purchased content on a multitude of platforms, for a price of about $15 each.

Fox calls its new system Digital HD (DHD), and will roll it out in 50 countries simultaneously.

The first movie on offer will be Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which was released on June 8 in North America. It will become available Sept. 8, well in advance of its Oct. 11 release on discs and VOD services.
