The world is populated with a precious few humanoid robots that can do basic tasks like run, ride bikes and open a can of soda, but according to one robot expert, the idea that robots could rise up and enslave us is a wildly optimistic view of the speed of robotics development.

For those of us who love robots, this is oddly dispiriting news. Yes, we should be pleased that we do not have to worry about robot overlords making our lives miserable in our lifetimes. But, speaking for myself, at least, were not.

The robot update comes courtesy of Evolution Robotics CEO and President Dr. Paolo Pirjanian, who sat down with Mashable at CES to talk about robots and their place in the consumer electronics landscape. Pirjanian should know a thing or two about it. His company has been in the space, delivering image recognition and location-awareness technology to consumer robots for years. Sonys AIBO robotic dog employed some of Evolution Robotics technologies. More recently, the company introduced its own robotic hard floor cleaner: Mint.

Pirjanian made it clear that such home-helper robotics will likely comprise the near future of CE robotics innovation.
