Michael Phelps may have won more medals, but gymnast Gabby Douglas has gotten more clicks, according to NBC.
The network, which is airing the Games in the U.S., gave a rundown of the most-watched Olympian athletes so far. The list reveals a lot of interest in Women's Gymnastics.
Despite the hype around Phelps, his most-watched Olympic moment online -- his gold medal in the 200M IM competition on Aug. 2 -- netted 1.192 million views vs. 1.463 million for the Team USA Women's Gymnastics gold medal-winning performance on July 31. The 16-year-old Douglas's gold-medal win on Aug. 2 garnered 1.096 million views.
NBC has benefited from such strong interest. With six days yet to go, NBCOlympics.com has surpassed 1 billion page views across computer, mobile and tablet platforms, which is almost as many as the network netted for the entire 2008 Beijing Olympics, NBC announced on Monday.
To put the figure in perspective, Wikipedia.org got 1.1 billion pageviews from the U.S. in June 2012, according to Google. Page views for the London Games are also outpacing those to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by 38%, according to NBC. Meanwhile, unique visitors so far have topped 57 million compared to 41.2 million for Beijing 2008. Much of the difference came from NBC-created apps. The NBC Olympics Live Extra app has netted 8.7 million uniques whilethe NBC Olympics app has brought in 3.1 million uniques. Overall, viewers have streamed 8.7 million hours of Olympics coverage so far, which is 365% more than for Beijing in the comparable time period.
