In October, leaked photos from the set of Game of Thrones caused a stir in the fandom world for their inclusion of a widely hated costume feature: nippled armor.

The costumes will be seen in Season 5, worn by the Sand Snakes, Prince Oberyn's three deadly daughters. Apparently, Game of Thrones' costume designer, Michele Clapton, isn't thrilled about the addition.

Clapton spoke to New York Magazine about the inclusion of nipples on the new female characters' armor, and explained how the armor came about.

"I’m not terribly keen on it," she said, adding: "I wouldn’t do it on men, and I don’t really like the concept of it on women. Of course you have to have the woman’s shape. That’s fine. But [nipples on armor] is almost from a man’s point of view, and there’s something slightly cheesy about it."

According to Clapton, the nipples on the armor are a result of the molds used to shape the material, and the design was not sanded to the extent that she had wanted.

Series author George R.R. Martin has spoken out in the past about the inclusion of nipples on breastplates; the analogy "useless as nipples on a breastplate" can be found throughout the books.

"I was surprised when I saw the picture," Clapton said. "But I didn’t notice them when I was there. And sometimes you can’t go back and change things."

Nipple armor has been a big no-no since the late '90s, during which director Joel Schumacher incorporated nipples heavily in the costumes for Batman & Robin.
