BBC reporter Jon Donnison tweeted a picture of the ceasefire agreement. It stipulates that Israel will "stop all hostilities on the Gaza Strip, land, sea and air including incursions and targeting of individuals," and that "Palestinian factions shall stop all hostilities from the Gaza Strip against Israel, including rocket attacks, and attacks along the border."

Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamel Amr announced the ceasefire in Cairo along with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who joined peace negotiations Wednesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement saying he had agreed to the U.S. suggestion "to give a chance to Egypt's proposal for a ceasefire and so give an opportunity to stabilise the situation and calm it before there will be need to apply greater force," BBC reports.

When violence re-escalated over a week ago, Twitter became a key outlet for citizen journalism within the area, as well as a place for the public relations divisions of Israel (@IDFSpokesperson) and Hamas (@AlqassamBrigade) to post real-time news of strikes and casualty reports.

Shortly after the ceasefire was announced, Twitter was filled with reactions and news of celebrations in Gaza.
