LONDON -- George Clooney was greeted by hordes of ecstatically happy people in Edinburgh on Thursday morning, when he paid a visit to a sandwich shop run by staff who used to be homeless.

The Hollywood actor accepted an invitation from the cafe's founder to come in and meet the people working there, Sky News reports.

Social Bite is a chain of five cafes across Scotland that classes itself as a "social business" -- basically an enterprise which sets out to solve issues in society rather than for the purpose of making a profit. One in four staff at the cafes used to be homeless, and all profits from the business go to a number of charities.

Clooney said he thinks the work the cafe chain does is amazing.

"I like what they're doing, I think it's a very important cause," Clooney told press gathered outside the shop. "The idea that we can all participate in everyone's difficulties is really important."

However pleased he was to be there, though, he wasn't half as excited as some of the people in the crowd.
