A sleepy town in Germany played host to the 55th Finger Wrestling Championships on Sunday.
Fingerhakeln, as the sport is known in German, involves two contestants each placing a finger through a leather band, then trying to pull one another across the purpose built tables. Hundreds of Germans and Austrians came together to battle in various weight and age categories in the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The sport is traditional in Bavaria and Austria and dates back to the 17th century.
Strength is clearly a key component to winning the championship, but good technique and the ability to put up with large amounts of pain are essential, too. As any contestant knows, dislocated fingers are a common part of the sport.
