Germany is considering a new law that will require men to wear condoms during sex with prostitutes.

The draft law, put forward on Tuesday, is meant to protect sex workers, according to a report from AFP.

Germany legalized prostitution in 2002. Under current laws, sex workers can collect public unemployment insurance and medical coverage.

Under the proposed new law, prostitutes would be required to meet regularly with government health counselors. The law, which is intended to make it harder for human traffickers to operate brothels, would also ban sex workers from living in the same rooms where they work.

"Finally, the prostitution industry will be regulated, and finally something will be done for the protection of men and women active in the sex trade," a German foreign ministry spokesperson reportedly told journalists.

The proposed law could enter into force on July 1, 2017, said Marcus Weinberg, a spokesman for women's affairs in Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, which backed it, according to Deutsche Welle.
