About one third of Americans avoid gluten, according to a 2013 report by consumer survey firm NPD Group.

About 1% of the American population is estimated to have celiac disease, in which gluten consumption damages the small intestine. Many others can still have trouble digesting gluten, even if they're not diagnosed.

Gluten is found in grains such as wheat and barley, and is included in many processed foods such as bread, pasta and beer.

But that doesn't mean all junk food is off limits. Here are a few recipes to make your favorite name brand snack totally gluten-free:

1. Baked chili cheese Fritos

Slice up and season some corn tortillas with chili powder, cumin, sea salt, onion powder and garlic powder in order to make your own gluten-free version of Fritos. Does it get any easier than that?

2. Faux Hostess cupcakes

The trick to these chocolate cupcakes is the use of fava bean flour and millet flour. And the best part is the marshmallow filling inside.

3. Thin Mints Girl Scout cookies

Perhaps one of the saddest truths about going gluten-free is the inability to devour Girl Scout cookies. Make your own batch with some peppermint and vanilla extract, and dark chocolate, of course.

4. Nabisco Ritz Bits peanut butter sandwich crackers

This one may look complicated, but it will be worth it the next morning. Make your own gluten-free dough and dust it with cinnamon-sugar topping. You'll enjoy breakfast all week -- or you know, any time of the day.
