Vermeer, Koons, Dali, Simpsons cartoonist Matt Groening -- these famous artists have a surprising common interest.

Gluten.

Once you realize the scope of gluten's role in classical and contemporary art, it's hard to imagine your favorite works without bread, pasta and glistening fields of wheat. That's where Arthur Coulet comes in.

Coulet, a French graphic artist, created Gluten Image, a "virtual museum" where he removes all gluten -- amber waves of grain and all -- from famous images.

The project is equal parts silliness and social commentary, particularly in an era when many people are eliminating gluten from their diets.

"Behind every joke there's a part of truth," Coulet told Mashable. Although the Tumblr was created for "fun first," he said, it also serves as a social commentary, grappling with, among other things, what Coulet calls the "religion of health."
